So what is welfare? Two main programs. TANF and SNAP. TANF is the Temporary Aid to Needy Families and people living with the help of TANF not only won’t do it forever but they ain’t gonna buy anything they don’t need to survive. TANF is time limited and has work or education toward work requirements.
SNAP is an acronym for what you call “Food Stamps” but actually means Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Note the word Assistance. SNAP does not pay for Crab Legs, Lobster and Filet Mignon if you want to eat the whole month through. Even with frugal shopping SNAP benefits only help you stretch your other benefits or paycheck. Yes I said paycheck. The number of SNAP households that have earnings while participating in SNAP has been rising for more than a decade. The overwhelming majority of SNAP recipients who can work do so. Among SNAP households with at least one working-age, non-disabled adult, more than half work while receiving SNAP.
